Mahoney reacts to state budget proposal on school consolidation
HARRISBURG, Feb. 4 – State Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Fayette,
today issued the following statement regarding Gov. Ed Rendell's 2009-10 state budget proposal, which included a call to review school district consolidation initiatives in Pennsylvania.
"By consolidating
small school districts we would give taxpayers the benefit of expanded real estate tax reform. I agree with the governor's
state budget proposal that we need to seriously look at cutting government costs by consolidating school districts in the
state."
Mahoney said he
will reintroduce legislation that would provide taxpayers savings by allowing residents to approve the consolidation of small
school districts.
The proposal would
allow county commissioners to place a referendum on the ballot asking voters if they support consolidating small school districts
into a single, countywide school district for the purposes of administration and taxation.
